CS-428/9AT-PRO2 is a converter that converts RS232 signals to RS422/RS485 signals, or RS422/RS485 signals to RS232 signals. RS232 communication distance is limited to 15m, but many field applications require communication over much longer distances. In such cases, RS422 or RS485 communication, which supports distances up to 1.2km, can be used. However, if the equipment itself is fixed to RS232, direct application is not possible. In this situation, simply connecting CS-428/9AT-PRO2 to the RS232 port resolves the issue without requiring any additional software work.
CS-428/9AT-PRO2 provides an Auto Toggling function for RS422/RS485 communication. This function helps prevent output signal collisions in RS485 networks and in RS422 multi-drop configurations. Because this function is supported at the hardware level, users only need to set the interface mode with the DIP switch, and the Auto Toggling function is automatically applied according to the selected interface mode.
In RS485 communication, Non-Echo mode is generally used. Non-Echo mode disables RS485 input while a specific device is outputting data to the RS485 communication line, blocking incoming signals during transmission. When the device is not transmitting, the input is enabled so that data output from other external devices on the RS485 communication line can be received. In other words, data is not received while the device is transmitting, and data is received only when the device is not transmitting. However, this creates one limitation: there is no direct way to verify whether the transmitted data was sent correctly. One way to confirm this is to receive an acknowledgement signal from the device that received the output data. Echo mode, on the other hand, allows the transmitted data to be verified. In Echo mode, the output data is looped back and received again; if the received data matches the transmitted data, it indicates that the data was sent correctly. If the output data and input data do not match, the data can be transmitted again for proper handling. In short, Echo mode keeps the input signal always enabled, allowing the device to receive both its own transmitted data and data sent by other devices.
4-wire RS485 uses the same wiring and operating method as RS422 multi-drop mode. Although the two standards have different electrical characteristics, many IC manufacturers today implement both RS422 and RS485 functions in the same chip, so there is no practical difference in usage.
