SB16C1052PCI is a serial port semiconductor for the PCI bus that integrates a PCI Target Controller with a 2-channel asynchronous communication UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter). If you open the case of a PC and look inside, you'll notice several white connectors; these are the interface points that expose the PCI bus to add-on hardware.
Using the PCI bus signals provided through these connectors, users can add functionality that isn't built into the PC, and PCI cards (such as VGA cards or internal modems) are exactly what provide that functionality. However, developing a PCI card that properly interfaces with the PCI bus is not a simple task. It typically requires either a highly skilled engineer or a chip that already has the desired functionality built on top of an existing PCI bus interface.
SB16C1052PCI is the chip to use when an additional COM port is needed beyond the COM1 port already present inside a PC. It is a single chip that allows two extra COM ports to be added to the PCI bus without requiring any additional electronic circuitry.
This product provides the ideal solution for building high-performance serial ports for the PCI bus. Users don't need to worry much about the PCI bus interface itself; they simply need to connect the PCI bus signal lines to SB16C1052PCI.
For advanced users, the PCI Configuration Header contents, including the Vendor ID and Device ID, can also be modified through an external Serial ROM.
Unlike similar existing products, SB16C1052PCI also supports a 66MHz bus operating speed, making it suitable for use with high-speed buses such as PCI-X.
When the built-in UARTs in this product are connected to an RS422/485 transceiver, the Auto Toggling function can be easily implemented using the available pins, without any additional circuitry. The device also works seamlessly with the drivers and applications provided by SystemBase.
SB16C1052PCI also offers a feature not found in competing products: a POLL/MASK register that makes it easy to control serial port interrupts, enabling a more efficient overall system design.
This product offers the most convenient and cost-effective solution for building serial ports, whether as a PCI add-in card for a PC or as part of a general PCI bus-based system.
Since this product was developed entirely in-house, another major advantage is that our team can provide the most responsive support for technical inquiries and issue resolution.
SystemBase has also developed the SB16C1052PCI Development Kit to help developers get up and running quickly. For more details, please refer to the SB16C1052PCI DK Product Brief.
SB16C1052PCI's advanced capabilities can be applied across a wide range of fields. These features are easy and straightforward to implement, enabling powerful, robust designs. The capabilities outlined below demonstrate the unique strengths that SB16C1052PCI brings to a design. For further details, please refer to the SB16C1052PCI datasheet.
Conventional PCI interface chips operate at only 33MHz. SB16C1052PCI, however, also supports 66MHz operation, giving designers the flexibility to choose between 33MHz and 66MHz configurations. Even at its top PCI operating speed of 66MHz, SB16C1052PCI delivers stable operation while supporting data transfer rates of up to 264MBytes per second — significantly faster than competing chips.
SB16C1052PCI integrates two UARTs with a register set compatible with the 16C550. Because these UARTs are directly connected to the PCI Target Controller Core and operate in an optimized configuration, the device delivers superior performance and stability compared with designs that pair a separate PCI controller and UART.
SB16C1052PCI is more than just a UART; through its optional registers, it provides a range of additional useful functions, including the maximum communication speed supported by the UART, line interface type selection, and interrupt control logic. Using these capabilities, a serial port can be built with full functionality and without requiring any separate external logic.

The IMR and IPR optional registers are control registers used to manage active interrupts for each port, functioning independently in a manner similar to other UARTs. The IMR (Interrupt Mask Register) enables or disables interrupts for each port, while the IPR (Interrupt Poll Register) prevents requested interrupts from being triggered on a per-port basis. Software developers can use these registers to control interrupt-driven ports conveniently and effectively.
SB16C1052PCI provides full modem signal support along with Tx/Rx signaling. The MSR (Modem Status Register) is always available to manage modem signal states, giving developers the flexibility to build devices freely over serial communication.
SB16C1052PCI supports PCI Power Management Interface version 1.1. This is useful when the computer in which SB16C1052PCI is installed supports power management: when the system enters an idle state, main power is cut and only auxiliary power is supplied. In this scenario, all components on the serial board other than SB16C1052PCI itself can have their power cut. The device also provides the ability to wake a computer that has had its main power cut, triggered by a specific signal received on an external modem signal line, such as a ring signal, allowing the system to resume normal operation.
CompactPCI is an industrial PCI bus standard defined by the PICMG organization for use in industrial computers built around the standard PCI bus. The specification adopts the same bus protocol as the standard PCI bus, but without certain electrical and physical characteristics. The Hot Swap feature defined within the CompactPCI specification was designed to further strengthen industrial CompactPCI systems, allowing CompactPCI boards to be inserted into or removed from a CompactPCI slot on an industrial computer without powering down the system. SB16C1052PCI complies with CompactPCI Hot Swap Specification 1.0.
